1 Chronicles 14:8 (KJV)

What does 1 Chronicles 14:8 mean?

1 Chronicles 14:8 describes how, after David was made king over all Israel, the Philistines heard about his new position and decided to confront him. When David learned of their approach, he went out to face them directly.

The verse is set in the time when David has just become king of a united Israel. The Philistines, long-time enemies of Israel, see David’s rise as a threat and move to challenge him. The verse shows both the political tension of the moment and David’s readiness to respond as Israel’s new leader.

The Hebrew behind 1 Chronicles 14:8

• "Anointed" (מָשַׁח, mashach): This word means to be set apart or chosen, usually for a special role like king or priest. Here, it highlights that David’s kingship is not just political but also has a sense of divine appointment.
• "Seek" (בָּקַשׁ, baqash): This word can mean to search for, pursue, or even to attack. In this context, it suggests the Philistines are not coming to congratulate David, but to confront or challenge him.
• "Went out" (יָצָא, yatsa): This word means to go out or come forth. It shows David’s active response—he does not wait passively but takes initiative to meet the threat.
