The Hebrew behind 1 Samuel 26:22

  • חֲנִית (ḥănît, "spear"): This word refers to Saul’s personal weapon, a symbol of his authority and kingship. By returning it, David is making a statement about not seeking to overthrow Saul by force.
  • נַעַר (naʿar, "young man"): This term often means a servant or attendant. David’s request for a young man to come fetch the spear shows respect for Saul’s position and avoids direct confrontation.
  • לָקַח (lāqaḥ, "fetch"): This verb means to take or receive. David’s use of it here is practical, but it also signals that he is not keeping what belongs to Saul, reinforcing his innocence.

Why 1 Samuel 26:22 matters

  • The verse clarifies that David’s actions were not rebellious or violent, but rather honorable and respectful toward Saul’s kingship.
