2 Chronicles 12:6 (KJV)

What does 2 Chronicles 12:6 mean?

2 Chronicles 12:6 describes how the leaders of Israel and their king admitted their wrongdoing and humbled themselves before God, openly declaring that the LORD is just and fair in His actions. This verse shows a moment of collective humility and recognition of God’s righteousness after facing consequences for their actions.

The setting is during the reign of King Rehoboam, after Egypt attacked Jerusalem as a result of the people turning away from God. The “princes of Israel” and the king respond to a warning from the prophet Shemaiah by acknowledging their guilt and God’s justice. Their statement, “The LORD is righteous,” is a confession that God’s judgment against them is deserved.

The Hebrew behind 2 Chronicles 12:6

• “humbled” (כָּנַע, kanaʿ): This word means to bring oneself low or to submit. Here, it emphasizes a genuine lowering of pride by the leaders and the king, not just outward actions but an inward attitude of repentance.
• “righteous” (צַדִּיק, tsaddiq): This word means just, fair, or morally right. When the leaders say “The LORD is righteous,” they are admitting that God’s actions are correct and justified, even when those actions involve discipline.

Why 2 Chronicles 12:6 matters

• This verse clears up the idea that humility before God is only an individual matter; here, it is a group response, showing that leaders and communities can collectively turn back to God.
• The emphasis on God’s righteousness helps the reader see that divine discipline is not arbitrary but is rooted in justice, and that acknowledging this is part of true repentance.
• In the wider passage, this verse marks a turning point where the people’s attitude changes, setting the stage for God’s mercy in the verses that follow.
