Not to abolish but to fulfil
Sermon on the Mount
Lord, you said, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” I seek you now.
Jeremiah 29:13
Holy Spirit, open my eyes, that I may see wonderful things in your word.
Psalm 119:18
Father, give me the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that I may know you better.
Ephesians 1:17
17Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
- Jesus says he came not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it. Where do you treat God’s commands as optional because you are under grace?
- He warns about anyone who “sets aside one of the least of these commands.” Which of his commands have you quietly set aside as small?
- He says your righteousness must surpass that of the Pharisees. Are you resting on outward rule-keeping rather than a heart made right by him?
His word
Jesus, you said you did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets but to fulfill them.
Receive
I cannot keep your law on my own. I receive your righteousness, and I ask you to write your commands on my heart.
Thanks
Thank you that you fulfilled what I could not. Amen.
