Lust and the heart
Sermon on the Mount
Father, give me the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that I may know you better.
Ephesians 1:17
Spirit of truth, guide me into all the truth.
John 16:13
You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.
Psalm 63:1
27Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. 29And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. 30And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
- Jesus says that looking with lust is already adultery in the heart. What are you letting your eyes linger on?
- He speaks of gouging out an eye and cutting off a hand. What sin are you treating as harmless that he treats as deadly serious?
- Are you managing a sin when he is calling you to cut it off? What decisive step would that take?
His word
Jesus, you said that lust in the heart is already sin in your sight.
Receive
Search my heart and show me what I must cut off. I receive your call to take sin seriously, and your grace to obey.
Thanks
Thank you that you forgive and cleanse me. Thank you that you are worth more than anything I give up. Amen.
