Fasting in secret
Sermon on the Mount
Holy Spirit, open my eyes, that I may see wonderful things in your word.
Psalm 119:18
Father, give me the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that I may know you better.
Ephesians 1:17
Spirit of truth, guide me into all the truth.
John 16:13
16Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 17But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; 18That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
- Jesus says, “When you fast,” not if you fast. When did you last deny yourself something in order to seek God?
- Do you want others to know how hard you are trying spiritually? Where does that show up?
- He says to wash your face so that it will not be obvious to others. What would it mean to keep your devotion between you and your Father?
His word
Jesus, you said, “When you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face.”
Receive
I want to seek you, not the notice of others. I receive your invitation to hunger for you in secret.
Thanks
Thank you, Father, that you see what is done in secret. Amen.
