Exodus 33:1 (KJV)

What does Exodus 33:1 mean?

Exodus 33:1 records God telling Moses to leave their current place and lead the Israelites toward the land God had promised to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob’s descendants. God is reminding Moses of His oath to the patriarchs and instructing him to continue the journey out of Egypt toward this promised land.

God is speaking directly to Moses after the Israelites’ sin with the golden calf. Despite their failure, God reaffirms His commitment to the promise made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The verse highlights both God’s faithfulness to His word and the leadership role Moses holds as the one who brought the people out of Egypt.

The Hebrew behind Exodus 33:1

• "LORD" (יְהוָה, Yahweh): This is the personal name of God, used here to emphasize that the command and promise come from God Himself, not just a generic deity.
• "Depart" (יָלַךְ, yalak): This word means "to go" or "to walk." God is giving a clear command for Moses and the people to move forward, not to remain where they are.
• "Sware" (שָׁבַע, shava): This word means "to swear" or "to make an oath." It underlines the seriousness and binding nature of God’s promise to the patriarchs.
• "Seed" (זֶרַע, zera): This word means "offspring" or "descendants." God’s promise is not just to the individuals named, but to their entire line, making the promise relevant to the whole nation of Israel.

Why Exodus 33:1 matters

• Exodus 33:1 clarifies that, even after the people’s failure, God’s promise to the patriarchs stands firm and is not canceled by their recent actions.
• The verse sets the stage for the tension in the following verses, where God’s presence with the people becomes a central concern.
• This verse connects the story of Moses and the Exodus directly back to the earlier promises in Genesis, showing the continuity of God’s plan throughout the Bible.
