What does Genesis 5:14 mean?

Genesis 5:14 closes the account of Cainan’s life by giving his total age and recording his death. The number, 910 years, covers his whole life, not just the years after he became a father.

The phrase “all the days” gathers his life into one total. After the account of his years and children in verses 12–13, the final words bring his entry to a close.

Why Genesis 5:14 matters

  • The total joins two periods of Cainan’s life. Genesis 5:12–13 gives 70 years before Mahalaleel’s birth and 840 years afterward, which add up to 910.
