What does Isaiah 27:2 mean?

Isaiah 27:2 calls for a song about a fruitful vineyard. The vineyard is a picture of God’s people, so the song introduces a hopeful picture of their future care. The KJV’s “red wine” points to the vineyard’s rich produce.

The command “sing ye unto her” addresses a group of singers and treats the vineyard as someone who can be sung to. After the judgment described in verse 1, the song shifts attention to a place God tends.

The Hebrew behind Isaiah 27:2

  • “sing” — עָנָה (ʿanah): This word can carry the sense of answering as well as singing. Here it may suggest a song sung in response, or a song shared among singers.
