What does Jeremiah 12:15 mean?

Jeremiah 12:15 says that God will show compassion to the peoples he has removed from their lands. Their removal will not be the end of their story: God promises to bring them back to the places that belonged to them.

God is speaking through Jeremiah. The words “I will return” describe a change in God’s dealings with these peoples after he has “plucked them out,” an image of pulling a plant from the ground.

The Hebrew behind Jeremiah 12:15

• “return” — שׁוּב (shuv): This word often means to turn or return. Here it introduces a change of action: God will turn from uprooting the peoples to showing them compassion.
• “heritage” — נַחֲלָה (nachalah): This word can mean an inherited possession or share of land. It gives “his land” the sense of a place belonging to a people by inheritance, rather than simply any place where they might live.

Why Jeremiah 12:15 matters

• The promise reaches beyond Judah. The surrounding passage identifies the peoples as Judah’s “evil neighbours,” who had touched the land God gave his people (verse 14).
• The return is pictured as a return to each people’s own place. The repeated “every man” and the words “his heritage” and “his land” emphasize that each has a place to which to return.
• The following verses show that the peoples’ conduct still matters in the passage. Verse 16 speaks of their learning the ways of God’s people, while verse 17 warns of another uprooting for a nation that will not listen.
