What does Joshua 18:3 mean?

Joshua 18:3 is a challenge to the Israelites who have delayed taking possession of the land. Joshua reminds them that the LORD, the God worshiped by their ancestors, has given them the land, yet they have not moved forward to occupy it.

Joshua speaks to the children of Israel after seven tribes are identified as still awaiting their land (verse 2). His question, “How long,” presses them to account for the delay. The verse holds the gift of the land and the need to go and possess it together.

The Hebrew behind Joshua 18:3

• “slack” — רָפָה (raphah): This word can carry the sense of being slack or holding back. Here it describes the Israelites’ delay in setting out to take possession.
• “possess” — יָרַשׁ (yarash): This word can mean to take possession of or occupy something. In this setting, the land is not merely to be named as theirs; the people are to go into it.

Why Joshua 18:3 matters

• Joshua’s question concerns the tribes still awaiting their portions, not a failure by every tribe to receive land. Joshua 18:2 specifies that seven tribes had not yet received their inheritance.
• Joshua’s words lead into an organized survey of the land. In verses 4–6, he tells the people to choose men to describe the land and bring the description back, so that portions can be assigned.
• The phrase “the LORD God of your fathers” connects the gift to the God known to Israel’s ancestors. Joshua grounds his question in that earlier relationship rather than presenting the land as his own gift.
