What does Judges 7:9 mean?

Judges 7:9 describes the moment when the LORD tells Gideon to move against the enemy camp. The LORD gives the order with an assurance of victory: the enemy has been placed in Gideon’s power, even though the encounter still lies ahead.

The command comes at night, after Gideon’s fighting force has been reduced to 300 men. “Into thine hand” pictures the enemy coming under Gideon’s control. The words give Gideon a reason to go down to the camp despite the small size of his force.

The Hebrew behind Judges 7:9

• “host” — מַחֲנֶה (machaneh): The word can mean a camp or an army. Here it points to the enemy force gathered in its camp below Gideon.
• “delivered” — נָתַן (natan): The word commonly means “gave.” The LORD speaks of giving the enemy into Gideon’s power as an accomplished act, although the battle has not yet taken place.
• “hand” — יָד (yad): The word means “hand,” but it can also express power or control. Gideon is being told that he will gain power over the enemy, not that he will literally hold the army in his hand.

Why Judges 7:9 matters

• The command and the assurance belong together. The word “for” links Gideon’s order to descend with the LORD’s statement that the enemy has been delivered into his hand.
• The passage allows for Gideon’s fear. In the next verse, the LORD tells him what to do if he is afraid to go down, before the attack unfolds later in the chapter.
