Numbers 4:45 (KJV)

What does Numbers 4:45 mean?

Numbers 4:45 records that Moses and Aaron counted the families of the sons of Merari, following the LORD’s command as delivered through Moses. This verse highlights that the census was carried out specifically as God instructed, focusing on the Merari clan among the Levites.

Moses is speaking, and the context is the census of the Levite clans for their duties related to the tabernacle. The sons of Merari were one of the three main Levitical families, and this verse notes their official counting. The phrase “by the hand of Moses” emphasizes that Moses acted as God’s chosen leader, carrying out God’s word exactly as directed.

The Hebrew behind Numbers 4:45

• “numbered” (פָּקַד, paqad): This word means more than just counting; it often carries the sense of careful oversight or appointment for a task. Here, it shows that the sons of Merari were not just counted but assigned a specific role.
• “families” (מִשְׁפָּחוֹת, mishpachot): This term refers to extended family groups or clans, clarifying that the census was organized by these family units, not just individuals.
• “word” (פֶּה, peh): Literally meaning “mouth,” this word is used here to mean “command” or “instruction,” stressing that the census was done exactly as God verbally directed.
• “hand” (יָד, yad): This phrase, “by the hand of Moses,” is a Hebrew way of saying “through the leadership or agency of Moses,” underlining his role as God’s representative.

Why Numbers 4:45 matters
