What does Psalms 115:14 mean?

Psalms 115:14 expresses a blessing that the LORD will bring growth to the people being addressed and to the generation after them. The words look beyond the present group to a future shared with their children.

The speaker addresses the people directly as “you,” giving the blessing the sound of words spoken to a gathered community. Following the blessing in verse 13, the phrase “more and more” pictures increase continuing rather than happening only once.

The Hebrew behind Psalms 115:14

• “increase” — יָסַף (yasaf): This Hebrew word can mean to add or continue. Here it conveys the idea of the LORD adding further increase, which the KJV expresses as “more and more.”

• “children” — בֵּן (ben): This word often means a son, and its plural can refer more broadly to children or descendants. The KJV’s “children” shows that the blessing reaches beyond those who first hear it.

Why Psalms 115:14 matters

• The blessing is spoken to a community, not just to one person. Earlier in the passage, Israel, the house of Aaron, and those who fear the LORD are addressed as groups (verses 9–11).

• The LORD is the source of the increase. That emphasis fits the passage’s contrast between the LORD, who helps his people, and idols that cannot speak or hear (verses 5–9).

• The blessing is connected with the world the LORD has made. Verse 15 calls the hearers “blessed of the LORD which made heaven and earth,” placing the words about increase alongside the LORD’s work as maker.
