What does Psalms 121:8 mean?

Psalms 121:8 says that the LORD will watch over a person’s movements and activities, wherever those movements lead. The promise reaches beyond a single journey or moment: the LORD’s care begins in the present and continues into the future.

“Going out” and “coming in” picture the ordinary pattern of leaving a place and returning. Following the promise of preservation in verse 7, the psalm’s final sentence places those daily movements under the LORD’s watch. The speaker addresses one person as “thy,” the KJV’s older word for “your.”

The Hebrew behind Psalms 121:8

• “LORD” — יהוה (YHWH): This is the personal name of Israel’s God. The KJV prints “LORD” in capital letters to distinguish the name from the ordinary title “Lord.”
• “preserve” — שָׁמַר (shamar): This word can mean to keep, guard, or watch over. Its repeated use in the psalm links the closing promise to the picture of a watchful keeper.
• “evermore” — עוֹלָם (ʿolam): This word can refer to a very long or lasting span of time. Here, “from this time forth, and even for evermore” stretches the promise from the present into an enduring future.
