What does Psalms 124:3 mean?

Psalms 124:3 describes how close Israel came to destruction when enemies rose against the people. The verse imagines what would have happened without the Lord’s help: the attackers would have overwhelmed them while their anger was burning.

The speaker uses “us” to speak for the people together. Following verse 2, “swallowed us up” pictures the enemies as a creature consuming its prey whole. The image makes the danger seem sudden and complete.

  • “quick” — חַי (ḥay): This word means “alive” or “living.” In the KJV, “quick” can mean alive rather than fast, so the picture is of being swallowed alive.
