What does 1 Kings 21:22 mean?

1 Kings 21:22 announces that King Ahab’s family line will meet the same disastrous end as two earlier royal families. God gives two reasons for this judgment: Ahab has provoked God’s anger, and he has led the people of Israel into sin.

Elijah is delivering God’s words to Ahab. The comparison with Jeroboam and Baasha gives the warning a specific shape: their families lost their royal lines through violent destruction. Ahab would have understood those names as examples from Israel’s own history.

The Hebrew behind 1 Kings 21:22

  • “house” — בַּיִת (bayit): The word can mean a household or family, as well as a building. Here it points to Ahab’s family line, especially his royal descendants.
