1 Samuel 23:4 (KJV)

What does 1 Samuel 23:4 mean?

1 Samuel 23:4 shows David asking the LORD for guidance a second time, and the LORD responding clearly that David should go down to Keilah, promising that He will deliver the Philistines into David’s hand. This verse highlights David’s careful dependence on God before taking action.

In this scene, David is hiding from King Saul and considering whether to help the town of Keilah, which is under attack by the Philistines. David seeks confirmation from the LORD (the personal name for God, often written as יהוה / YHWH / Yahweh), and God answers directly, encouraging David to act and assuring him of victory. The verse emphasizes the importance of seeking God’s direction and the assurance that comes when God answers.

The Hebrew behind 1 Samuel 23:4

• "enquired" (שָׁאַל / sha’al): This word means to ask or seek, often used for seeking guidance from God. David’s repeated asking shows his desire for certainty and his respect for God’s will.
• "again" (יָסַף / yasaf): This word means to do something again or add to it. The verse notes that David did not just ask once, but persisted, showing his caution and reliance on God’s answer.
• "deliver" (נָתַן / natan): This verb means to give or hand over. Here, God promises to give the Philistines into David’s power, making it clear that victory will come from God, not just David’s skill.

Why 1 Samuel 23:4 matters

• This verse clarifies that David did not act impulsively but sought God’s will carefully, even when he already had some direction.
• The emphasis on God’s promise to “deliver” the Philistines highlights that success comes from God’s intervention, not merely human effort.
• The verse connects to the larger story of David’s rise and his relationship with God, showing a pattern of seeking guidance and receiving clear answers in times of crisis.
