1 Samuel 24:22 (KJV)

What does 1 Samuel 24:22 mean?

1 Samuel 24:22 describes how David made a solemn promise to Saul, after which Saul returned to his home, but David and his men went up to a stronghold instead of following Saul. This shows that, even after their peaceful exchange, David remained cautious and did not fully trust Saul’s intentions.

In this scene, Saul had just spared David’s life after David showed mercy by not harming Saul in the cave. Saul asked David to swear not to destroy his descendants, and David agreed, making an oath. Even though Saul left peacefully, David chose to stay in a secure place with his men, highlighting the tension and lack of complete trust between them.
