1 Samuel 8:22 (KJV)

What does 1 Samuel 8:22 mean?

1 Samuel 8:22 describes God telling Samuel to listen to the people's request and appoint a king for them, so Samuel sends the Israelites back to their towns. This verse marks the moment when God allows Israel to move forward with their desire for a human king, even though it was not His original plan for them.

Samuel is the prophet and last judge of Israel, and he has been speaking with God about the people's demand for a king. The people of Israel wanted to be like other nations, with a king to lead them. Here, God tells Samuel to "hearken unto their voice" and make them a king, so Samuel dismisses the people to return home, signaling that the process of choosing a king will begin.

The Hebrew behind 1 Samuel 8:22

• LORD (יְהוָה, Yahweh): This is the personal name of God, emphasizing that the instruction comes directly from Israel’s covenant God, not just a generic deity.
• Hearken (שָׁמַע, shama’): This word means more than just hearing; it carries the sense of listening attentively and acting on what is heard. God is telling Samuel to actively respond to the people's request.
• Make (מָלַךְ, malakh) and king (מֶלֶךְ, melek): Both words are related; "make" here means to appoint or establish, and "king" is the title the people desire. The use of both words highlights the formal act of setting up a monarchy, not just picking a leader.

Why 1 Samuel 8:22 matters

• This verse clarifies that God did not force Israel to accept a king but allowed them to have what they persistently asked for, even though it was not His first intention.
• It connects to the wider story where God warns the people about the consequences of having a king, showing that God respects human choice but also lets people experience the results of their decisions.
• The verse sets up the transition from the period of judges to the era of kings in Israel’s history, which will shape the rest of the Old Testament narrative.
