Deuteronomy 11:19 (KJV)

What does Deuteronomy 11:19 mean?

Deuteronomy 11:19 tells the Israelites to teach God’s commandments to their children, talking about them throughout daily life—at home, on the road, at bedtime, and when getting up. The verse emphasizes making these teachings a natural, ongoing part of family life and conversation.

In this part of Deuteronomy, Moses is speaking to the people of Israel as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. He urges them not just to know God’s laws themselves, but to pass them on to the next generation in every setting. The verse paints a picture of faith being woven into ordinary routines, not reserved for special times or places.

The Hebrew behind Deuteronomy 11:19

• "teach" (לָמַד, lamad, H3925): This word means more than just giving information; it often carries the sense of training or forming habits. The verse calls for active, repeated instruction, not just a one-time lesson.
• "children" (בֵּן, ben, H1121): This word can mean sons or children more generally, highlighting that the responsibility to teach applies to all the next generation, not just a select few.
• "speaking" (דָּבַר, dabar, H1696): This word is about ongoing conversation, not just formal lectures. The verse encourages a natural, everyday sharing of these teachings.
• "sittest" (יָשַׁב, yashav, H3427), "walkest" (יָלַךְ, yalak, H3212), "liest" (שָׁכַב, shakav, H7901), "up" (קוּם, qum, H6965): These words cover all the main activities of daily life—sitting at home, traveling, lying down, and rising up—showing that teaching is meant to happen in every part of the day, not just at set times.

Why Deuteronomy 11:19 matters

• Deuteronomy 11:19 clears up the idea that faith or religious teaching is only for special occasions; instead, it shows that teaching about God is meant to be woven into everyday life.
• The verse highlights the importance of parents and elders in shaping the next generation’s understanding, making it clear that passing on faith is a shared, ongoing responsibility.
• This verse connects to the wider passage’s theme: remembering God’s instructions and making them central to the community’s identity as they move into a new land.
