What does Ecclesiastes 9:15 mean?

Ecclesiastes 9:15 shows a sharp contrast between a person’s usefulness and the recognition he receives. A poor man’s wise action saves a city, but the people do not keep his contribution in mind afterward.

The speaker, often called the Teacher, tells this story after describing a small city under attack by a powerful king. The poor man enters the story without wealth or apparent standing, yet his wisdom succeeds where the city faces a much stronger force.

The Hebrew behind Ecclesiastes 9:15

• “delivered” — מָלַט (malat): This word carries the sense of bringing someone or something to safety. Here it describes the city’s escape from danger through the man’s wisdom.
• “remembered” — זָכַר (zakhar): This word can mean keeping someone in mind or giving them recognition. The word points to what happened after the rescue, when the man’s contribution was no longer recalled.

Why Ecclesiastes 9:15 matters

• The story separates wisdom from social standing. The Teacher later observes that “the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard” (verse 16), even though the poor man has proved wise.
