What does Ephesians 4:2 mean?

Ephesians 4:2 describes the way the people addressed are to treat one another: without putting themselves above others, without harshness, and with patience when relationships are difficult. Love is the setting for their willingness to bear with one another.

Following Paul’s appeal in verse 1 about how they should live, verse 2 gives that appeal a distinctly personal focus. “Forbearing one another” pictures people staying with one another despite the strain that can arise between them.
