What does Ezekiel 44:16 mean?

Ezekiel 44:16 describes the special duties given to the priests descended from Zadok. God says they may serve close to him inside his sanctuary, the holy place set apart for his presence, and carry out the responsibilities he assigns them there.

God is speaking to Ezekiel in a vision of a temple. The words “come near to my table” picture priests approaching a place associated with offerings made to God. After verse 15 names the priests descended from Zadok, verse 16 identifies the place and focus of their service.

The Hebrew behind Ezekiel 44:16

  • “minister” — שָׁרַת (sharat): This word means to serve or attend to someone. Here it describes the priests’ work as service directed to God himself.

Why Ezekiel 44:16 matters

  • The passage distinguishes these priests from other Levites, members of the wider group assigned temple duties. Ezekiel 44:10–14 describes limits placed on Levites who had gone astray, while verse 15 identifies Zadok’s descendants as having remained faithful to their duties.
