What does Genesis 11:4 mean?

Genesis 11:4 describes a group of people planning a shared building project to gain a name for themselves and keep their community together. Their city and tower express both their ambition and their concern that they might be spread across the earth.

The speakers are the people settling in the land of Shinar. After discussing building materials in verse 3, they turn to the purpose of their work. A tower with its top reaching “unto heaven” pictures a structure rising high into the sky.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 11:4

• “name” — שֵׁם (shem): This word can refer to a person’s name or reputation. Here, “make us a name” suggests that the builders want to gain recognition for themselves.
• “heaven” — שָׁמַיִם (shamayim): This word can mean the sky or the heavens. In the picture of a tower reaching upward, it describes the height the builders have in mind.

Why Genesis 11:4 matters

• The builders’ fear gives their plan a particular purpose. The word “lest” introduces what they hope to avoid: being “scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”
• The later scattering overturns that purpose. In Genesis 11:8, the Lord scatters the people, and they stop building the city.
