What does Genesis 2:10 mean?

Genesis 2:10 describes the garden as a place supplied with water by a river coming out of Eden. The river then divides into four waterways, connecting the garden’s setting to a larger landscape.

The narrator describes this scene after the account of the trees in verse 9. The movement from one river to four “heads” prepares the reader for the names and locations that follow in verses 11–14.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 2:10

• “heads” — רֹאשׁ (rosh): This word can mean a head, a beginning, or a chief part. Here, “heads” refers to the four waterways into which the river divides, rather than to four human or animal heads.
• “parted” — פָּרַד (parad): This word carries the sense of separating or dividing. The wording pictures a single river branching into distinct waterways.

Why Genesis 2:10 matters

• The garden and Eden are related but are not presented as identical names. The verse says the river came “out of Eden” to water “the garden,” distinguishing the garden from the place called Eden.
