What does Genesis 25:8 mean?

Genesis 25:8 describes the end of Abraham’s life as the death of a man who had reached an advanced age. The narrator also places Abraham among his people in death, using a phrase that connects his death with the family who had gone before him.

The KJV phrase “gave up the ghost” means that Abraham breathed his last. The words “full of years” picture a life that had reached its fullness; the preceding verse gives his age as 175.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 25:8

• “gave up the ghost” — גָּוַע (gavaʿ): This word carries the sense of breathing one’s last or dying. “Ghost” here is an older English way of speaking and does not suggest that a ghost appeared.
• “full” — שָׂבֵעַ (savaʿ): This word can mean satisfied or having had one’s fill. In this verse, it adds a sense of fullness to the description of Abraham’s long life.
• “gathered” — אָסַף (asaf): This word means to gather or bring together. It gives the phrase “gathered to his people” the picture of being joined to a group.

Why Genesis 25:8 matters

• Being “gathered to his people” is distinct from Abraham’s burial in the story. Verse 9 describes his sons burying him afterward, so the phrase is not simply a report that his body was placed in a grave.
• The passage gives Abraham’s death both a family setting and a specific place. Isaac and Ishmael bury him in the cave of Machpelah, where Sarah had been buried (Genesis 25:9–10).
