What does Genesis 39:1 mean?

Genesis 39:1 places Joseph in a vulnerable position in Egypt. He has been sold to Potiphar, a man with a position in Pharaoh’s service, and is now under Potiphar’s control as an enslaved person.

The narrator tells the reader how Joseph came into Potiphar’s household, after the account of Judah in Genesis 38. The phrase “of the hands of the Ishmeelites” pictures the transfer of Joseph from the traders to his new owner.
