What does Haggai 1:13 mean?

Haggai 1:13 records God’s assurance to the people that he is with them. After the people have listened to Haggai’s earlier words, the message tells them that they are not facing the work before them alone.

The verse carefully identifies Haggai as the LORD’s messenger and his words as the LORD’s message. The brief statement “I am with you” is presented as God speaking directly to the people through Haggai.

The Hebrew behind Haggai 1:13

• “messenger” — מַלְאָךְ (malʾakh): This word means someone sent to deliver a message. It can also refer to a heavenly messenger, but here it describes Haggai, the human speaker.
• “saith” — נְאֻם (neʾum): This word introduces or marks a formal spoken declaration. Here it signals that the assurance comes from the LORD, even though Haggai delivers it.

Why Haggai 1:13 matters

• The assurance comes in response to the people’s attention to God’s words. The preceding verse says they obeyed and “did fear before the LORD” (Haggai 1:12).
• The message belongs to the work of rebuilding the house of the LORD. Soon afterward, the people begin that work under their leaders (Haggai 1:14–15).
