What does Hebrews 3:2 mean?

Hebrews 3:2 presents Jesus as someone who can be trusted to carry out the task God gave him. The writer compares Jesus with Moses, whose faithful service would have been familiar to readers who knew the story of Israel.

Following the mention of Jesus in verse 1, the writer uses the image of a “house” to describe the people and responsibilities entrusted to Moses. The comparison draws on Numbers 12:7, where God speaks of Moses as faithful in his house.

• “faithful” — πιστός (pistos): The word carries the sense of being dependable or trustworthy. Here it describes how Jesus carried out what God entrusted to him.
