What does Isaiah 29:16 mean?

Isaiah 29:16 challenges people who act as though God, their maker, cannot see or understand what they do. Their thinking reverses the proper relationship between a maker and what has been made.

The verse pictures a clay object talking back to the potter who shaped it. After the people’s secret plans in verse 15, Isaiah uses two questions to expose the absurdity of denying the maker’s knowledge.

The Hebrew behind Isaiah 29:16

• “turning of things upside down” — הֵפֶךְ (hephekh): The word carries the sense of an overturning or reversal. It gives a name to the backward thinking pictured by the clay speaking against its maker.
• “understanding” — בִּין (bin): This word carries the sense of perceiving or understanding. The shaped object’s claim questions the maker’s ability to grasp what is happening.

Why Isaiah 29:16 matters
