Jeremiah 37:7 (KJV)

What does Jeremiah 37:7 mean?

Jeremiah 37:7 records God’s message to the king of Judah: although Pharaoh’s army from Egypt has come to help Judah against Babylon, that Egyptian force will soon return to its own land and not provide the help Judah hopes for. This is a warning that Judah should not rely on Egypt for deliverance.

In this verse, the LORD (God of Israel) instructs Jeremiah to respond to King Zedekiah, who had sent messengers to ask God for guidance. The historical setting is Jerusalem under threat from Babylon, with Judah hoping Egypt’s intervention would save them. God’s answer is clear: Egypt’s army will go back home, leaving Judah without the support they expected.

The Hebrew behind Jeremiah 37:7

• "LORD" (יְהוָה, YHWH): This is the personal name for Israel’s God, emphasizing that the message comes from the highest authority, not Jeremiah’s own opinion.
• "help" (תְּשׁוּעָה, teshua): This word means deliverance or rescue. The verse points out that the expected rescue from Egypt will not actually happen.
• "return" (שׁוּב, shuv): This verb means to turn back or return. It highlights that Pharaoh’s army will not stay to fight, but will go back to Egypt, dashing Judah’s hopes.

Why Jeremiah 37:7 matters

• Jeremiah 37:7 corrects the false hope that Egypt’s military support would save Judah from Babylon, showing that trusting in foreign alliances instead of God is futile.
• The verse sets the stage for the coming events in Jerusalem, making clear that God’s word—not political strategy—determines the outcome.
• This message highlights the theme running through Jeremiah: God’s people must listen to His warnings, even when they run counter to what seems politically wise or hopeful.
