What does Job 10:18 mean?

Job 10:18 expresses Job’s anguish as he asks God why he was allowed to be born. In the KJV, Job wishes he had died before anyone saw him, showing how unbearable his suffering has become to him.

Job speaks directly to God, the one he addresses as having brought him out of the womb. After speaking of God’s care in forming him, Job now questions why his life began at all.

The Hebrew behind Job 10:18

• “brought me forth” — יָצָא (yatsa): The word can mean “to come out” or “to bring out.” Here it pictures God as the one who brought Job out of the womb, making Job’s question a direct appeal to God.
• “given up the ghost” — גָּוַע (gavaʿ): The word means “to die” or “to breathe one’s last.” The KJV phrase uses older English; Job is speaking of death, not of releasing a ghost.

Why Job 10:18 matters
