What does Job 33:10 mean?

Job 33:10 presents Job’s complaint that God treats him as an opponent. Elihu, the speaker, is addressing Job and putting Job’s complaint into words as part of his answer to him.

The KJV word “occasions” means grounds or pretexts for acting against someone. Following Job’s claim of innocence in verse 9, Elihu presents Job as questioning why God has taken a hostile position toward him.

The Hebrew behind Job 33:10

• “occasions” — תְּנוּאוֹת (tenuʾot): The word is often understood to mean grounds for complaint or pretexts. In this verse, it suggests that Job sees God as looking for reasons to oppose him.
• “counteth” — חָשַׁב (ḥashav): This word can mean to consider or regard someone in a particular way. Here, the complaint concerns the way Job believes God regards him.

Why Job 33:10 matters

• Elihu is reporting a complaint, not announcing his own conclusion about Job. He introduces the words by saying that Job has spoken in his hearing (verse 8).
• The claim of innocence gives the complaint its force. In Elihu’s account, “I am clean” in verse 9 stands beside the accusation that God treats Job as an enemy.
