What does Job 33:25 mean?

Job 33:25 describes a sick person becoming well and strong again. Elihu uses the picture of a child’s fresh flesh and a return to youth to express a dramatic recovery from the physical decline he has been describing.

Elihu is speaking to Job about a person brought close to death by illness. After the rescue described in verse 24, the person’s body is pictured as fresher than a child’s. The comparison gives a vivid sense of renewed health, rather than merely saying that the sickness has passed.

The Hebrew behind Job 33:25

• “fresher” — רָטַב (raṭav): This word carries the sense of being fresh or moist. Here it suggests flesh that has regained its healthy condition, in contrast with the wasting described earlier in verse 21.

• “youth” — עֲלוּמִים (ʿalumim): This word refers to the time of youth. Together with “days,” it points to the vigor associated with an earlier stage of life.

Why Job 33:25 matters

• Elihu presents the recovery as part of an example addressed to Job. He says, “If there be a messenger with him” in verse 23, before describing the rescue and renewed body. The example is part of Elihu’s response to Job, not a report that Job has already recovered.

• The picture includes restored standing as well as bodily health. In verse 26, the person prays, is received favorably by God, and sees God’s face with joy. That surrounding detail shows that Elihu’s account reaches beyond the change in the person’s flesh.
