What does Jonah 1:6 mean?

Jonah 1:6 shows the shipmaster urging Jonah to join the desperate effort to save everyone aboard. The shipmaster hopes that Jonah’s God might notice their danger and keep them from dying.

The shipmaster finds Jonah asleep during the storm, after the sailors have already called on their own gods in verse 5. His question, “What meanest thou, O sleeper?” expresses surprise at finding Jonah asleep when the ship is in danger.

The Hebrew behind Jonah 1:6

• “shipmaster” — רַב הַחֹבֵל (rav haḥovel): The phrase refers to the chief person responsible for the ship. The man waking Jonah is the one in charge aboard the vessel.
• “think” — עָשַׁת (ʿashat): Here the word is often understood as giving attention or showing concern. The shipmaster hopes God will notice the people in danger, not merely have a passing thought about them.

Why Jonah 1:6 matters

• The shipmaster speaks with hope rather than certainty. “If so be” means that he sees a possibility that God will respond.
• The request concerns everyone aboard. The words “upon us” and “we perish not” make the danger shared, even though the shipmaster addresses Jonah alone.
• The shipmaster asks Jonah to call on “thy God,” treating Jonah as someone who may appeal to a God the sailors have not yet addressed. Later, the sailors ask Jonah about his people and his country as they try to understand who he is (Jonah 1:8).
