What does Obadiah 1:9 mean?

Obadiah 1:9 announces that Edom’s strongest defenders will lose heart as destruction comes upon their homeland. The verse presents their dismay as part of a disaster that will leave the people of Esau’s mountain region exposed to slaughter.

God addresses Teman directly, as though speaking to the place and its people. Teman was a region associated with Edom, and “the mount of Esau” refers to Edom’s mountainous homeland. After the loss of Edom’s wise men in verse 8, verse 9 turns to the collapse of its military strength.

The Hebrew behind Obadiah 1:9

• “mighty” — גִּבּוֹר (gibbōr): The word can refer to a strong man or warrior. Here it points to men Edom might have expected to defend it.
• “dismayed” — חָתַת (ḥātat): The word can carry the sense of being terrified or losing courage. The threat reaches the warriors’ confidence as well as their physical safety.
• “cut off” — כָּרַת (kārat): The word often means to cut or cut down. With “by slaughter,” the phrase gives a picture of lives being violently ended.
