What does Philippians 4:13 mean?

Philippians 4:13 says that Paul has strength through Christ to face the range of circumstances he has been describing. His words concern both having plenty and going without, rather than a promise that he can accomplish any goal he chooses.

Paul speaks from experience, having just described times of fullness and hunger in verse 12. The words “which strengtheneth me” identify Christ as the source of the strength Paul speaks about.

The Greek behind Philippians 4:13

• “do” — ἰσχύω (ischyō): The Greek word carries the sense of having strength or being able. Here it points to Paul’s capacity to meet circumstances, not simply to completing a task.
• “things” — πᾶς (pas): This word can mean “all” or “every.” Its range in this sentence is understood from the situations Paul has just listed.

Why Philippians 4:13 matters

• “All things” belongs to the subject Paul is discussing, not to an unlimited list of achievements. Verse 12 names changing conditions, including abundance and need.
• Paul’s contentment is something he has learned. In verse 11, he says he has learned to be content in whatever state he is in; verse 13 names the source of his strength.
• Paul’s words come within a thank-you for practical help. In verse 14, he says the Philippians did well to share in his trouble, even after describing his ability to face need.
