What does Psalms 130:5 mean?

The speaker waits expectantly for the LORD, resting his hope on what God has said. In a psalm that begins with a cry “out of the depths” and speaks of sin and forgiveness, this waiting expresses dependence on God’s response.

The key is the repeated wording: “I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait.” The Hebrew repeats the same verb, while “my soul” brings the speaker’s whole self into the statement. The second phrase deepens the first: the speaker himself is absorbed in waiting.

The Hebrew behind Psalms 130:5

• “wait” — קָוָה (qavah): This verb means to wait or look expectantly for someone or something. Both occurrences of “wait” use this verb. Here, the waiting is directed toward the LORD and is joined to hope in his word.

• “LORD” — יהוה (YHWH): This is God’s personal name, represented in the KJV by “LORD” in capitals. The speaker is waiting for Israel’s God, the one whom the surrounding verses address as able to forgive and redeem.

• “soul” — נֶפֶשׁ (nephesh): This word can mean life, self, or person. In “my soul doth wait,” the speaker describes his own deepest longing; “soul” does not isolate a spiritual part of him from the rest of his person.

• “word” — דָּבָר (davar); “hope” — יָחַל (yachal): Davar means a word, statement, or message; yachal means to wait with hope or expectation. “In his word do I hope” identifies God’s spoken assurance as the basis of the speaker’s expectation, without naming a particular promise.

Why Psalms 130:5 matters
