What does Psalms 8:8 mean?

Psalms 8:8 names birds and creatures of the sea as part of the living world placed under human care and rule. The verse completes a list of creatures, showing that the reach of human responsibility extends beyond animals found on land.

After the land animals in verse 7, the psalm moves upward to the air and outward to the sea. “The paths of the seas” pictures routes through the water, as though sea creatures travel along roads of their own.

The Hebrew behind Psalms 8:8

• “air” — שָׁמַיִם (shamayim): This word can mean “heavens” or “sky.” Here it points to the open sky where birds fly.
• “paths” — אֹרַח (oraḥ): This word means a path or a traveled way. Used of the seas, it gives the movement of sea creatures the image of travel along a route.
