Psalms 87:6 (KJV)

What does Psalms 87:6 mean?

Psalms 87:6 says that the LORD will keep a record, noting each person who was born in Zion. The verse pictures God as carefully counting and writing down the names of those who belong to His special city.

This verse is part of a psalm celebrating Jerusalem (Zion) as a city especially loved by God. The speaker describes a future time when God Himself will recognize people from many nations as citizens of Zion, recording their names. The phrase “Selah” signals a pause, inviting the reader to reflect on the significance of being counted among God’s people.

The Hebrew behind Psalms 87:6

• LORD (יְהוָה, Yahweh): This is the personal name of God used in the Hebrew Bible, emphasizing His covenant relationship with His people.
• count (סָפַר, saphar): This word means to count, number, or record. It highlights the idea of God’s careful attention to who belongs to Zion.
• up (כָּתַב, kathav): This means to write or record. The verse pictures God as a scribe, writing down names in an official record.
• people (עָם, am): This word refers to a group or nation, showing that God’s record includes people from many backgrounds, not just native Israelites.
• born (יָלַד, yalad): This means to be born. The verse stresses the importance of spiritual or symbolic birth into Zion, not just physical ancestry.
• Selah (סֶלָה, selah): This word often signals a pause for reflection, suggesting the reader should stop and consider the weight of what has just been said.

Why Psalms 87:6 matters

• Psalms 87:6 clarifies that belonging to God’s people is not just about physical descent but about being recognized by God Himself, which would have been a surprising idea in ancient Israel.
• The verse connects to the wider psalm, which celebrates Zion as a city open to people from many nations, not just Israelites, showing God’s inclusive vision.
• The mention of God “writing up the people” gives a sense of official recognition and lasting record, emphasizing the security and honor of being counted among God’s own.
