What does Zechariah 6:5 mean?

Zechariah 6:5 explains that the four figures in Zechariah’s vision are heavenly spirits sent out after standing before the Lord. The picture presents their movement across the earth as a mission that begins in the presence of the one who rules it.

The angel is answering Zechariah’s question about the four chariots he has seen. “Standing before” the Lord pictures attendants waiting in the presence of a ruler, ready to carry out his orders.

The Hebrew behind Zechariah 6:5

• “spirits” — רוּחוֹת (ruḥot): This word can mean “spirits” or “winds.” The KJV’s “spirits” fits the picture of heavenly beings standing before the Lord, while the word can also suggest movement through the sky.
• “Lord” — אָדוֹן (adon): This word means a master or ruler. Paired with “of all the earth,” it presents the one before whom the spirits stand as having authority over the whole world.

Why Zechariah 6:5 matters

• The chariots are more than ordinary vehicles in the vision. The angel’s answer identifies them with “the four spirits of the heavens,” giving Zechariah a way to understand what he has seen.
• The mission reaches beyond one place. The phrase “Lord of all the earth” fits the later picture of the chariots going out in different directions, including toward the north and south (verses 6–7).
