1 Chronicles 21:19 (KJV)

What does 1 Chronicles 21:19 mean?

1 Chronicles 21:19 describes how David obeyed the prophet Gad’s instructions, which Gad gave as a message from the LORD. David went up, as he was told, to do what God required of him through Gad’s words.

In this setting, David is responding to a crisis after he had sinned by ordering a census of Israel. God sent Gad, a prophet, to deliver His command. The verse shows David’s willingness to listen and act on God’s message, even when it is difficult, highlighting the importance of obedience to God’s direction.

The Hebrew behind 1 Chronicles 21:19

• “Up” (עָלָה, `alah): This word often means to ascend or go up, and here it emphasizes David’s physical movement to a specific place as God directed, not just a general action.
• “Saying” (דָּבָר, davar): This word can mean a word, matter, or command. In this verse, it refers to the specific instruction Gad delivered from God, showing that David’s action is a direct response to God’s communicated will.
• “Name” (שֵׁם, shem): Used here for “in the name of the LORD,” it signals that Gad’s words carry God’s authority, not just his own opinion.
• “LORD” (יְהוָה, YHWH): This is the personal name of God in the Hebrew Bible, underscoring that the command comes from Israel’s covenant God, not just any deity.
