1 Chronicles 21:30 (KJV)

What does 1 Chronicles 21:30 mean?

1 Chronicles 21:30 explains that David did not go to the tabernacle to seek God because he was afraid, due to the presence of the angel of the LORD and the sword the angel carried. The verse highlights David’s fear and hesitation to approach God directly at that moment.

The setting is after David’s sin of ordering a census, which led to God sending a plague on Israel. David had seen the angel of the LORD with a drawn sword, which caused him to fear. This verse explains why David offered sacrifices on a different altar instead of going to the usual place of worship, showing the seriousness of the situation and David’s awe at God’s power.

The Hebrew behind 1 Chronicles 21:30

• "Afraid" (יָגֹר, yagor): This word is often used for a deep, trembling fear. Here, it shows that David’s fear was not just caution but a real sense of dread in the presence of the angel.
• "Sword" (חֶרֶב, cherev): The mention of the sword emphasizes the danger and judgment David witnessed, making his fear understandable.
• "Angel" (מַלְאָךְ, mal’akh): This word means “messenger,” but in this context, it refers to a supernatural being carrying out God’s judgment, which adds weight to David’s reaction.
