1 Corinthians 11:12 (KJV)

What does 1 Corinthians 11:12 mean?

1 Corinthians 11:12 teaches that just as woman originally came from man, now every man is born through a woman, and ultimately, everything comes from God. The verse highlights a mutual dependence between men and women, while reminding readers that God is the source of all things.

Paul is writing to the church in Corinth, addressing questions about relationships between men and women, especially in worship settings. In this verse, Paul balances earlier statements about origins by showing that neither men nor women are independent of each other, and he places God as the ultimate origin and authority over all creation.

The Greek behind 1 Corinthians 11:12

• γυνή (gynē, "woman") and ἀνήρ (anēr, "man"): Paul uses these words to point out the mutual relationship—woman came from man (in creation), but now man is born through woman (in childbirth).
• ἐκ (ek, "of") and διά (dia, "by/through"): These prepositions highlight different directions—"of" (from) man, and "by" (through) woman—emphasizing the ongoing cycle of dependence.
• πάντα (panta, "all things") and θεός (theos, "God"): Paul finishes by saying "all things are of God," which shifts the focus from human origins to God as the ultimate source, putting human relationships in perspective.

Why 1 Corinthians 11:12 matters

• This verse corrects any idea of superiority or independence between men and women by showing their mutual dependence.
• Paul’s statement places both men and women under God’s authority, reminding readers that God is the true source of life and order.
• The verse ties together Paul’s earlier discussion about creation and roles in worship, showing that any distinctions are not about value or worth, but about the way God has arranged things.
