What does 1 Kings 13:10 mean?

1 Kings 13:10 describes the departure of a man sent by God to Bethel. By taking a different route home, he follows the instruction he had received about his journey. His choice shows that the direction of his return was part of what he had been told to do.

The sentence comes just after the man refuses King Jeroboam’s offer of food and a reward. The narrator then describes his departure, rather than reporting more of the conversation. The man’s route matters because the instruction covered not only what he did at Bethel but also how he left.

Why 1 Kings 13:10 matters

• The different route was part of a specific command, not merely a preference. In verse 9, the man says he was told not to return “by the same way” he came.

• The verse shows what the man did at this point in the story. Later, an old prophet meets him and persuades him to return for a meal, despite the instruction the man had received (verses 15–19).

• The change of route helps explain the old prophet’s pursuit. His sons report which way the man from Judah went, and the old prophet follows and finds him (verses 11–14).
