What does 1 Kings 15:4 mean?

1 Kings 15:4 says that the LORD preserved David’s royal line in Jerusalem by placing Abijam’s son on the throne. The verse gives the reason as “for David’s sake,” rather than presenting the succession as a reward for Abijam’s conduct.

After the criticism of Abijam in verse 3, the narrator uses a lamp as a picture of a royal line that continues to shine. The son in view is Asa, who succeeds Abijam as king in verse 8.
