What does 1 Kings 20:8 mean?

In 1 Kings 20:8, Israel’s elders and people advise King Ahab to refuse a demand from Ben-hadad, king of Syria. Their answer gives Ahab a clear response to an invading king who is pressing for more than Ahab has already agreed to give.

The demand concerned Ben-hadad’s servants searching Ahab’s palace and his officials’ houses and taking whatever pleased them. The elders and people address Ahab together, making their advice a shared response rather than the judgment of one adviser.

• “Hearken” — שָׁמַע (shamaʿ): This word can mean to hear or to listen. Here, it carries the sense of paying heed to Ben-hadad’s demand, not merely hearing his words.
