What does 1 Kings 22:27 mean?

1 Kings 22:27 records King Ahab’s order to imprison Micaiah and give him meager food and water. Ahab intends to keep the prophet confined until the king returns safely from battle, despite Micaiah’s warning that the battle will end badly.

Ahab gives the order through officials named in verse 26. The phrase “bread of affliction and … water of affliction” pictures a harsh prison diet, not a meal of comfort. Ahab’s promised return “in peace” sets up a direct test of Micaiah’s warning.

The Hebrew behind 1 Kings 22:27

• “affliction” — לַחַץ (laḥaṣ): This word carries the sense of oppression or distress. Joined to both bread and water, it makes the food and drink part of the hardship imposed on Micaiah.
