1 Kings 3:28 (KJV)

What does 1 Kings 3:28 mean?

1 Kings 3:28 describes how all the people of Israel heard about the wise decision King Solomon made, and they developed a deep respect for him because they recognized that God had given him wisdom to judge fairly. The verse shows that Solomon’s reputation for wise judgment spread quickly and made a strong impression on the nation.

This verse comes right after the famous story where Solomon settles a dispute between two women claiming to be the mother of the same baby. The people are not speaking directly; instead, the verse summarizes the public reaction to Solomon’s judgment. The key idea is that Solomon’s wisdom is seen as coming from God, and this inspires both respect and a sense of awe among the people.

The Hebrew behind 1 Kings 3:28

• "Judgment" (מִשְׁפָּט, mishpat): This word means a legal decision or verdict. Here, it refers to Solomon’s ability to decide cases justly, which was central to his role as king.
• "Wisdom" (חָכְמָה, chokhmah): This word means skill, insight, or practical wisdom. The people saw that Solomon’s ability to judge was not just intelligence, but a special gift from God.
• "Feared" (יָרֵא, yare): This word often means to have reverence or awe, not just to be afraid. The people’s fear of Solomon reflects deep respect for his authority and the divine wisdom he displayed.
